Framed size is 31 x 36 inches Artist Robert William Wood was born in 1889 on the southern English coast, not far from the White Cliffs of Dover. Also a famous painter, W. J. Wood was his father who early on recognized his young son's talent, sending Robert to art school at age twelve. Wood was awarded four first awards and three second awards, one each year in school, setting a record for his age group. Later, Robert Wood traveled to the United States and Canada and Mexico while he studied the landscape and its people in each country. As America's most popular landscape artist, Robert Wood documented in oils the American seashores and its wilderness. In the history of his body of work, it is noted Robert Wood's landscapes were published and widely reproduced, allowing the artist great familiarity and popularity. While Wood lived and painted in Texas for several years, the artist moved to Carmel, California to paint marine scenes. Shortly thereafter, Wood moved to Laguna Beach and became an outstanding figure in the colony of Laguna Beach artists and the surrounding art world in southern California. In later years, he lived in Bishop and La Jolla, California. Just short of his 90th birthday, artist Robert Wood died in 1979.
